Visiting the Austin Zoo

 

There's no better place to take the whole family than The Austin Zoo, which overlooks Barton Creek Habitat Preserve. It houses more than 300 animals of 100 different species year-round. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the Austin Zoo, which offers a feeding area, a train ride, and regular educational demonstrations.

 

MEET THE ANIMALS

Founded in 1999 as a goat rescue and rescue zoo, the zoo operates in west Austin as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. The zoo cares for exotic animals, retired zoo and research animals, and more. Below you can find a list of species represented:

 

Learn more about the status of lions and tigers as endangered species up close. The Zoo recently welcomed two new Cheetahs, Daya (6 years old) and Amina (7 years old) from the Metro Richmond Zoo in Austin.

Our staff rescued and rehabilitated three young black bears that live in Austin.

 

Find out what they are by watching monkeys, lemurs, and marmosets interact!

You'll find exotic bird species roaming the zoo grounds, including peacocks and chickens.

There is a unique species of Texas Rat Snake called the Leucistic Texas Rat Snake found primarily in the state of Texas.

Texas' longhorn cattle are more than a breed, they're a source of pride. Enjoy a picture with this iconic animal at the zoo while you're there.

Get your magnifying glass out to check out the zoo's smaller animals! Seek out these native Texas species, from ants to lizards to birds to butterflies.

Education Programs

In addition to its educational programs, the Austin Zoo also offers several special events. Join one of the daily zookeeper chats, which cover a variety of animals. Kids ages 6-10 can take part in all-day camps on certain Saturdays, as well as 90-minute family programs on Sunday mornings. Close Encounters

Get up close and personal with some of the zoo's residents! Take a 30-minute walk through the Galapagos with the capybaras, Diego, Enrique and Olivia, or the Galapagos tortoises, Muffet, Gertie, and Wheezy. Visit the zoo's website for details about scheduling and pricing.

 

Train

The Texas Hill Country can be seen from a train ride that lasts 20 minutes! Every half hour from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., rides are available for $5 per person.

 

Picnic Areas

During your visit to the zoo, you are welcome to bring food and drink from home. At the weekends, a concession stand sells snacks and picnic tables are located throughout the grounds of the zoo.

 

Gift Shop

The Austin Zoo Gift Shop sells apparel and souvenirs, and guests can purchase Animal Food for $300 in order to feed the domestic animals.

 

HOURS & ADMISSION

Weekday hours for the Austin Zoo (February 1 - October 31) are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday hours are 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Weekdays are closed between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., and weekends from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. During the winter months (November 1-January 31), the zoo is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Each day, admission closes an hour before the zoo closes.

 

The price of general admission is $1695 for adults, $1595 for students, military and seniors 60 and older, $1395 for children, and $1195 for members. Visit the website to purchase tickets in advance or visit the gift shop to purchase tickets upon arrival.

 

A convenient parking lot is available on site for free. Bring a bottle of water and wear comfortable walking shoes! Donations are appreciated.

 

With young children, it is best to plan for about a 3-hour trip to the zoo to watch zookeeper chats, watch feedings and ride the train. Adult groups who wish to see all of the animal enclosures can expect to be finished in about 90 minutes.
